<image:title>Art Historian - Art Historian</image:title>
<image:caption>I am a lecturer, researcher and writer in Art History and English Literature, specialising in the Long Nineteenth Century, most particularly the Victorian era. I have over 20 years experience of designing and teaching courses at university level, for Liverpool University (Continuing Education), LJMU, Bradford University, and in a freelance capacity at other education venues and societies, such as The Art Fund. I have taught courses at many art galleries over the years, including the Walker Art Gallery, the Lady Lever, the Atkinson and Tate Liverpool; teaching also at Liverpool’s Speke Hall and Sudley House. My areas of expertise include the Rossettis, the Pre-Raphaelites and Aestheticism, the Arts and Crafts Movement, and Museum Studies. Much of my teaching over the years has been interdisciplinary, looking at art and literature together in subjects such as the Brontës, the femme fatale and fallen woman, as well as genres such as Landscape and the Nude. During my career, I have taught across different university departments, including History of Art & Museum Studies, History, Graphic Design & Illustration, and English Literature. My 2013 doctorate on the Pre-Raphaelite poet-painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, presented new analyses of his art, design and written work within the retrieved historical and cultural context of Victorian Spiritualism and Swedenborgianism. I am currently returning to my research on Rossetti, with a view to writing and future publication. My other research interests include the Liverpool shipping magnate and art patron Frederick Richards Leyland, a subject I have taught extensively, and the Victorian-Edwardian artist John Maler Collier. I am currently working towards a future exhibition on Collier at the Atkinson Art Gallery. I am a member of the Association for Art History, the Pre-Raphaelite Society, the William Morris Society, the Brontë Society and the Swedenborg Society. See the ‘Classes and Courses’ section for upcoming talks, lectures and courses. See also my Facebook Page Art History with Dr. Anna Maddison (@arthistorywithanna).</image:caption>

<image:title>More about me - More about me</image:title>
<image:caption>I have many years experience working in the fields of art and literature, and I’m passionate about sharing knowledge and ideas. Here’s a little bit more about me. I have a long association with the Atkinson Art Gallery in Southport, lecturing and contributing to the their archive since 2003. I currently teach a regular course on the History of Art, using and contextualizing works from their collection. Between 2008 and 2011 I worked as the gallery’s Painting of the Month Officer, and continue to give Object of the Month talks which highlight artists represented in the Atkinson collection. In 2007 I was one of a cross section of women selected to choose work for the Atkinson’s Sefton Sisters exhibition, and in 2008 I was a judge for the Sefton Open Art Exhibition. In addition, I co-curated the Identity & Place Exhibition (2009), which showcased the work of artists Jagjit Chuhan and Richard Creed. I was also involved for many years with the Friends of the Atkinson Art Gallery, twice holding the position of Chairman. I am currently working towards a future exhibition at the Gallery showcasing the work of Victorian artist John Maler Collier. In addition to English Literature teaching, and my MA in Victorian Literature, I worked as a bookseller for a number of years at Broadhursts of Southport, a new, second hand and antiquarian bookshop. In addition to bookselling and new books buying, I was involved in organising and attending various book signings and literary events, with writers including Carol Ann Duffy, Andrew Motion and Roger McGough. In 2019 I was selected to be chief judge of the Southport Writer’s Circle Short Story Competition. I also enjoy writing poetry and have been developing a portfolio of works for a number of years.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artist - Artist</image:title>
<image:caption>As an artist, I enjoy expressing myself in different media and styles. My favourite medium is collage, but I also create graphic designs using pen and ink, paint ceramics, and paint in watercolour and acrylics. I also design and make jewellery using a variety of materials, such as gemstones, beads, metal, wood and card. In order to create my pieces, I purchase new components and materials, but also recycle elements from second hand and vintage items, as well as making my own beads. I am a member of the SAA (Society of All Artists) and I receive commissions for my work. I have sold a number of my original creations under the design name Damozel Designs, which I set up over 10 years ago. You can see more on my Facebook page Damozel Designs (@damozeldesigns). I sold a selection of cards and gifts based on my graphic designs at Broadhursts of Southport Bookshop UK on Market Street, Southport, before their closure in 2024.</image:caption>

<image:title>Yoga Teacher - Yoga Teacher</image:title>
<image:caption>My classes blend traditional Hatha and modern Yoga, seeking strength, flexibility and harmony through both static postures and flows, breathing practices, meditation and other techniques such as mantras, mudras and chakra work. I teach at The Dairy Holistic Hub in Southport, where we believe yoga is for everybody and always encourage people to practise in a way that’s best for them. I first discovered Yoga as a teenager and have had a regular and evolving practice for over 25 years, studying under a number of teachers and in different styles. I gained my teaching qualification (Diploma: Yoga Teacher (Hatha Yoga) QLS Level 4) from the British School of Yoga, training for 5 years. In addition, I am a member of the British Wheel of Yoga and have completed their Foundation Courses 1 and 2 (120 hours). I am also a member of The Subtle Yoga Resilience Society, founded by Kristine Kaoverii Weber. I continue to develop and further my skills through additional training courses, including a Yoga Alliance Restorative Yoga Training Certificate (2023) and an academic course with Yogic Studies on the history of postural yoga: YS 105 A Brief History of Asana (2024). See under the ‘Classes and Courses’ section for more information on classes. You can also see more on my Facebook Page Yoga with Anna (@yogawithannamaddison).</image:caption>
